Iraqi left celebrates May Day

02 May 2009, By

Although much smaller than the million people who gathered behind trade union banners in Baghdad 50 years ago to celebrate the removal of the monarchy, this year’s demonstrations in Baghdad and Basra were positive and much larger than in recent years – a testament to the greater space for operation that the Iraqi workers’ movement now has. There is less violence on the streets, and the Iraqi Government is being inched towards accepting greater freedom for trade unions (but there’s much more to be done).

Here’s my favourite (BBC) image of the day from a post by Iraqi Communist Party blogger Salaam Saadi, who has many more pics.
