Building Stronger Unions : Residential Summer School

8 – 11 June 2009, Ruskin College, Oxford (maximum 20 places available, £150 per delegate)

The summer school is aimed at union Officers and Organisers and will build on the recent regional briefings – “Organising in Economic Downturn”.  We will consider the impact of the downturn on both the economy and its wider impact on manufacturers, suppliers, retailers and providers and, just as importantly, unions.

This course will offer perspectives on campaigning methods incorporating examples from Wellstone Action delivered by Carl Roper, National Training & Consultancy Officer (Organising).  Corporate Research in both the Public and Private Sector will be introduced by Tom Mellish (Policy Officer Organising & Health and Safety)

The course will also feature guest speakers, David Weil, author of Strategic Planning for Labour Unions and Senior Lecturer at Boston University as well as Paul Nowak, TUC National Organiser, the course will be facilitated by Liz Blackshaw, Director, TUC Organising Academy.

The overall aims of the course are to give union organiser and officer the tools to make strategic decisions about potential growth, decline and building capacity,
