Around 20 TSSA members working for Thomas Cook in Dublin have been arrested whilst staging a sit at the store they work in, which the company is trying to shut down. You can read the story via Labour Start below;
http://www.labourstart.org/cgi-bin/show_news.pl?country=Ireland&langcode=en
The sit-in began at the store on July 31st when managers arrived to announce they were closing it, together with another shop, once staff had been cleared from the premises. The move by Thomas Cook coincided with the announcement by TSSA that on an 84% turnout members in the two shops had voted 100% for strike action.
Union members had been balloted in response to the company’s plans to quit Ireland by the end of August and make over 50 staff redundant after 125 years in the Republic.
More information on the dispute is available at the TSSA website – www.tssa.org.uk

The 60 second advert challenge has picked up a pace. We have a number of entries and the workshops with Harry and Herring advertising agency were well attended with some great ideas coming back and forth. One of the attendees had had 12 t-shirts made especially to make her ad, so we are all certainly looking forward to receiving that entry.
A final reminder to those who are making adverts for the TUC 60 second advert contest, there are just two weeks left to send in your entries.
This is an exciting competition. For those people who don’t know the challenge is to make a 60 second advert about trade unions for youtube. The competition is open to everyone and there are some great prizes to be won. The winning entry will be shown at TUC congress.
It’s up to people what techniques they use, they can be as mainstream or quirky as people like. Closing date GMT Midnight, 17 August 2009.

Here is a cute little entry from one of our young members -
The TUC is calling on wind turbine manufacturer Vestas to halt its closure programme and work with unions, business and the government to preserve the future of the industry in the UK.
Workers at the Isle of White based factory have occupied the site for almost two weeks in protest at the planned closure which would result in the loss of over 600 jobs.
The full TUC statement can be read here. You can get more information about the campaign and send messages of support via the campaign website – http://savevestas.wordpress.com/

Trade unionists reading The Guardian on Saturday morning (of which I’d imagine there were a fair number) would have been forgiven for choking on their cornflakes when they read the headline in the ‘Work’ section - ’Are Unions Back in Fashion?’. What followed was, what I thought to be, a relatively positive and well balanced article that as well as (of course) looking at the decline in union membership since the 70s, also focused on how unions are responding to the recession (and because because of it, possibly being seen as relevant for the first time by many workers) and attempting to broaden the profile of workers that they represent.
