Act now in solidarity with Iranian hunger striking trade unionist

11 Dec 2010, By

Reza Shahabi is the Treasurer of the Tehran-based bus workers union in Iran. He has been on hunger strike since 4 December, in protest against his imprisonment, and that of his fellow trade unionists. He was arrested on 12 June 2010, three days after the arrest of Saeed Torabian, the union’s spokesperson. Saeed Torabian has since been released but there are six other members of Sherkat-e Vahed (the Union of Workers of the Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company), including Reza, in prison.Gholamreza Gholamhosseini, Morteza Komsari and Ali Akbar Nazari have all been arrested since the beginning of November and we believe they are all prisoners of conscience, held solely on account of their peaceful trade union activities. Mansour Ossanloo, the head of the union and his deputy, Ebrahim Madadi, are already serving prison sentences. They must be immediately and unconditionally released.

More Iranian trade unionists from the teachers and sugar workers union are also in jail. The Iranian regime keeps trying to crush independent trade unionism, and the incredible bravery of our brothers and sisters in Iran demands our support.

An attack on unions anywhere is an attack on unions everywhere, so please join the protest which is being run by Amnesty International, the ITUC and the ITF.
