Bahrain’s union calls off general strike
The important role being played by the free and independent union in Bahrain – a sister union of the TUC, affiliated like us to the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) – was highlighted in the Financial Times yesterday. Particularly important to the country’s oil industry, the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions (GFBTU) had called the general strike in response to the incursion of Saudi armed forces, which the union described as an occupation. The strike was called off to help the economy, after union leaders received assurances about the safety of workers. The GFBTU is one of the unions that would benefit from donations to the TUC Aid solidarity appeal for unions in the Middle East and North Africa. Please give generously!
