Solidarity with Greek unions on strike against austerity

19 Oct 2011, By

GSEE / ADEDY posterThe TUC General Council, meeting this morning, sent solidarity greetings to our sisters and brothers in Greece (GSEE and ADEDY) striking against austerity today and tomorrow. TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:

“Workers in Greece are taking action for their families and their communities. Their demand for fairness and growth rather than austerity is as relevant in Britain and across Europe as it is in Greece.”

The situation in Greece gets worse by the day, and has deteriorated since GSEE International Secetary Zoe Lanara wrote about the cuts for Touchstone. The latest developments will further exacerbate the recession and increase unemployment. The official unemployment rate for Greece is now 16.5%, up from 12% a year earlier.

The head of ADEDY, the public sector union confederation, has called for a crackdown on tax evasion and higher tax contributions from the wealthy rather than the current round of austerity measures focused on cutting wages and pensions and reducing the public sector workforce.
