Take Action! Stop the Government of Ecuador shutting down teachers’ union
The teachers’ union UNE of Ecuador (Unión Nacional de Educadores), an affiliate of global union federation Education International (EI), is facing the threat of being shut down by the Ecuadorian government as the Ministry of Education has initiated proceedings for the union’s legal dissolution. EI is running a campaign action in partnership with Labour Start which we think you should support.
The government justifies the dissolution by the implementation of a specific regulation, Decree 16, which concerns the registration of non-profit organisations. However the Ministry of Labour had assured the ILO earlier this year that Decree 16 does not apply to trade unions.
UNE General Secretary, Rosana Palacios, who was part of the EI delegation to the ILO Conference in June explains:
“The Ecuadorian government is seeking to dissolve our trade union because of the public statements we made at the ILO Conference and the UN Human Rights Committee this year, explaining in detail and with evidence, how the government systematically violates freedom of association.”
Education International and UNE have called on the international trade union movement to urge Ecuador’s Minister of Education, Mr Augusto Espinosa Andrade, to halt the legal proceedings against the teachers’ union and to respect the fundamental rights of the education employees and their organisations. UNE has received support from the ILO and other EI affiliates from around the world.
Please take a moment and sign the Labour Start campaign and demand that the Ecuadorian government halts the legal proceedings of dissolution against UNE; respects the fundamental rights of the education employees and their organisations and respects its international commitments to the ILO, as a signatory to ILO Conventions 87 and 98.
