UNIONS ARE GOOD FOR EVERYONE!
- You earn more and learn more in your career
- You and your employer work more effectively and safely
- You are part of a tradition of social justice in the workplace and the wider community
JOBS, GROWTH AND A NEW ECONOMY
Long-term investment in skills and the green economy will create jobs. Unions campaign against the blinkered vision of organisations that just want to cut costs and companies seeking short-term gain for shareholders.
FAIR PAY AND A LIVING WAGE
On average union members:
- take home higher pay
- have better sickness and pension benefits
- have more holiday and more flexible working hours
If you are young a union can get you up to a third more pay!
GOOD SERVICES AND DECENT WELFARE
Unions helped set up the NHS and the welfare state, and are fighting now to stop benefit cuts and to curb the increasing privatisation in health and education and the private waste in our railways.
RESPECT AND A VOICE AT WORK
Unions believe in equal opportunities and diversity. We make sure employers treat everyone at work with the same fairness. We campaign against the far-right. We help migrant and domestic workers get a fair deal, and combat exploitation.
Three out of four workplaces are now covered by a formal equal opportunities policy to ensure workers are treated fairly.
Unions bargain for their members as a group. They win the best deals, even pay rises when times are hard. And you are safer in unionised workplaces. Union reps save the taxpayer millions every year by keeping us healthy at work and preventing accidents. And if a problem ends up going to court, unions have the best legal advice.
In 2011, in the public sector, unions won pay rises more than half the time (55%). But when unions weren't there to bargain, only a third of deals included a rise (35%).
