Sum us up

As people may know Rich Trumka, the current secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO has announced that he will be standing for the ‘presidency’ of the organisation.

Reading this article about his candidacy, I was struck by this line,

“Here’s the deal – For employers who want to work with us and want to work with workers, we’ll be the best friend they ever had. For those that want to abuse people, take benefits away, jettison retirees, then we are going to do everything in our power to stop that from happening.”

I thought this neatly summed up where unions need to be at the current time – working positively with those employers who want to engage with us; taking an uncompromising stance towards those employers intent on using the recession as a convenient stick to beat their workforce.

Here’s a little bit of a challenge: can you come up with a snappier, pithier ‘mission statement’ for unions in the UK? No more than 2-3 sentences, and it has to be something as relevant for BALPA and the SoR as it is for UNISON and UNITE. Suggestions in the comments section please!

    1. To promote, defend and extend the rights of people at work
    2. To develop and champion strong, organised, local groups of people at work

Tough task and Jim seems to capture it well. After some head scratching here’s an alternative-

    1) To organise, educate and empower workers to address the issues they encounter .
    2) To engage employers and government with the concerns of workers.
